The history of computers spans thousands of years, from simple counting devices to programmable electronic machines and modern networked computers.
Early calculating devices
People used tally marks, counting boards, and the abacus long before electronic computers existed. The abacus, used in several ancient cultures, made arithmetic faster by representing numbers with movable counters.
Mechanical computers
In 1642, Blaise Pascal built a mechanical calculator that could add and subtract. In the 1670s, Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz developed a stepped-drum calculator capable of multiplication and division. During the 1800s, Charles Babbage designed the Difference Engine and later the Analytical Engine, a general-purpose mechanical computer concept. Ada Lovelace described an algorithm for the Analytical Engine and is often associated with the earliest published computer program.
Electronic computers
During the 1940s, electronic computing developed rapidly. ENIAC, completed in the United States in 1945, was one of the earliest large-scale general-purpose electronic digital computers. Early machines used vacuum tubes, which were later replaced by transistors. Integrated circuits then allowed many electronic components to be placed on a single chip, making computers smaller, faster, and more reliable.
Personal computers
The invention of the microprocessor in the early 1970s made it practical to build much smaller computers. Systems such as the Altair 8800 helped launch the personal-computer movement. By the late 1970s and 1980s, machines from Apple, IBM, Commodore, and others brought computing into homes, schools, and offices.
Internet era
Computer networking expanded from research networks into the modern Internet. The World Wide Web, proposed by Tim Berners-Lee in 1989 and implemented around 1990, made it easier to publish and navigate linked information. Since then, computers have become embedded in phones, vehicles, appliances, data centers, and many other systems.
